Cooper's Hawks have always been attracted by the birds who come to the feeders and the canopy nearby. As anecdotal as this might be, the photos in this series beginning in 2015 show the maturation process from juvenile to adult with the possiblity that the same bird has taken my yard as his own.
The following captures from a late September afternoon while watching a racous confrontation about to happen between a Flicker and a Jay at a feeder when this juvenile Cooper's Hawk burst out of the fir tree nearly catching his dinner. Flying directly over my head I could see a moment of indecision catching eating one or the other that saved them both and left the disgruntled hawk perched on our fence as if to heal his wounded pride.
