Downy Woodpecker

Downy Woodpeckers live year round along Johnson Creek. Over the years there has been a succession of Downy families coming to our feeder and foraging through the canopy above the creek. The frequency of their visits increases as they build their nests and rear their young coming to a head when they bring their young to the feeder. Most of these images are from winter, spring and fall as Downy's seem to have worn their feathers to the shaft providing for their young and are rather ragged through the summer as the renew their plumage.

Juvenile Downy Woodpecker Gallery: A series of images of young Downys as they mature.
